I wrote this book because I kept seeing the same disconnect from three unique vantage points:
In the businesses I partnered with, I watched as AI began changing the skills companies value and the entry-level work they hire for.
In the education space, I saw schools, professors, counselors, and career advisors trying desperately to prepare students while the ground beneath them was shifting.
And as a parent of two college students, I found myself struggling to give my own kids the kind of confident career advice my parents gave me.
The old playbook was changing. Students had the most at stake — and very little practical guidance written specifically for them.
So I wrote the book I wanted to hand my kids.
What I Hope Indispensable Does
This isn't a book about being afraid of AI. And it isn't a book about blindly embracing every new tool that comes along.
It's a book about agency.
Students entering high school, college, and the workforce today have an enormous advantage: they can see this disruption coming.
I wrote Indispensable to help them use that advance notice — to become genuinely AI-fluent while building the judgment, creativity, communication, empathy, and problem-solving skills that will become even more valuable as AI gets better.
Inside, I tackle questions like:
How should students think differently about choosing a college, major, and career path?
What happens when AI starts absorbing the work traditionally given to entry-level employees?
How can students use AI as a collaborator without letting it do their thinking for them?
Which human capabilities become more valuable as AI improves?
What can students do now to build real experience, judgment, and a body of work?
I don't pretend to know exactly what the future will look like. Nobody does.
But students don't need a crystal ball.
They need better information, better questions, and the confidence to start making deliberate choices.
